Parents ignored her desperate appeals
hubli: she had confided in her parents in hubli her husband and in-laws were physically abusing her, demanding more dowry. but they never understood the gravity of the situation. her father mohammed inamsab was for reconciliation. and he was confident giving birth to a child would bring happiness to his daughter. on tuesday, mohammed went to bijapur to bring his seven-month pregnant daughter, banu, to hubli for delivering her baby. when he reached the place, a horrified mohammed had to see the body of banu. she had been thrown into a well and drowned. banu was a resident of yellapuroni in hubli. it was poverty that forced mohammed, a father of five children, to agree to get his daughter married to nissar iqbal. for nissar iqbal, it was a second marriage. "though banu was initially reluctant, marriage was the only hope for a female child in a poor family," mohammed said. the marriage took place about 15 months ago. "not a single night did she sleep in peace after the marriage. from the very next day, she was subjected to abuse," the inconsolable parents and relatives of banu said on wednesday. she in fact wanted to come back to her parents unable to bear the abuse. but the father still had some hope. "what could i do with such a poor income. i was not in a position to spare anything from my income." mohammed is a small-time mechanic and he has to support a large family. golagumatta police have arrested nissar iqbal, while the other family members of the accused are said to be absconding. mohammed, who is yet to reconcile himself to the fact his daughter is dead, says, "she had a reason to die for being harassed. but, what about the unborn child in her womb? before coming to world it was snatched away."
